Pickleball can be played as a singles or doubles game and is usually played on a court that's about the size of a badminton court. The objective of the game is to hit a small, perforated plastic ball over a net with paddles. The serve must be underhand and diagonally crosscourt. Games are usually played to 11 points and players must win by two points.
-
To play pickleball, the basic equipment you'll need includes a paddle, a net, and a pickleball. The paddle size, shape, and materials differ, and players can choose paddles that suit their comfort and playing style. The net used for pickleball is slightly shorter than a tennis net. Pickleballs are durable and come in a range of colours to provide visibility on the court.
-
Due to the smaller court size, pickleball requires less space than tennis, making it accessible to a wider group of players. A pickleball court is one-third the size of a standard tennis court, about 20 by 44 feet for both singles and doubles play.
-
While specialised court shoes, such as those designed for tennis, are ideal due to their support and stability, you can play pickleball in regular athletic footwear. The most important factor is the shoe's comfort and grip on the court's surface, which should provide suitable support for your ankles and arches, as pickleball involves a fair amount of lateral movement and quick stops and starts.
-
Pickleball has its unique vocabulary, and knowing these terms can greatly enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the game. Some of the most common terms include:
Kitchen: The non-volley zone in front of the net where players cannot volley the ball.
Volley: Hitting the ball in the air before it bounces on your side of the court.
Dink: A soft shot that just passes over the net and lands within the non-volley zone (Kitchen).
-
Pickleball uses a system of ratings to classify players' skill levels, ranging from 1.0 (beginner) to 5.0 (professional level). It's important to understand what level you are, as games will be much more enjoyable if they are equally matched.
-
Improving in pickleball, as with any sport, requires practice, patience, and a willingness to learn. Attending workshops, working with coaches, and playing with a variety of partners can help you improve your skills. Regular drilling and match play will enhance your comfort on the court and your ability to react to different game situations.
-
Pickleball is suitable for players of all ages and physical abilities. The sport's unique rules and equipment make it easier on the body than more physically demanding sports, resulting in fewer injuries. It's also a social game, promoting camaraderie between players of all backgrounds.
-
Playing pickleball has a range of health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, increased mobility, and enhanced hand-eye coordination. It's also a great way to burn calories and can promote mental health through the social interaction and enjoyment of the game.
